i have just been granted a blue badge, and the first time i used it in town i was a bit nervous as you are, i parked legally on yellow lines, gathered my stick etc and got out of the car to try and do xmas shopping early to avoid crowds, when i was confronted by a couple about 40ish looking at me as if i was an alien, when i asked if i could help them the man said" cant you park properly then,or are you lazy, you dont look disabled to me"i stood mouth open unable to take in what was said,as i went to reply, they walked off muttering something about women drivers,i feel this wont be my first approach, any one else had problems with joe public?

hi Dorothy, so sorry to hear you've had a bad experience out on your first venture with your Blue Badge, fortunately i have'nt had any such encounters, if i have to go any distance then i have to wait for my Hubby to come with me as i suffer badly with Osteo in my knee's. and he pushes me in a wheelchair so i guess that answers a lot of people's questions. when i go out on my own i sometimes feel people are looking at you as you park as i am not visibly disabled when on my feet until i start to walk with a heavy limp and not in the chair but if anyone did approach me i'm afraid they would get short shrift from me !! my Blue Badge has made such a differenece to my life all i can say is heaven help anyone who come's between me and my badge i'm sure it will make a difference to you. Sorry, you had a bad experience on your first trip with the badge.
I have had a blue badge for the last 8 years, and it has been a Godsend. Being able to park near your destination and on yellow lines makes life so much more easy and gives you independence.
My badge is for 3 years at a time. The first 2 times I renewed I had no problems, but last time, they pulled me over the coals. I had to go to an interview and show them, how I walked. It was like a third degree. Eventually I got my badge renewed, but it was touch and go, although I presented letters both from my GP and rheumatologist. I don`t receive DLA, and therefore they are terribly strict.
I wish you`Happy driving`I think, you were just unlucky to meet a rude couple. I have had no problems .

The next time someone says you don't look disabled, just look them up and down and say "you don't look ignorant"!

My daughter's friend Lisa is drop dead gorgeous, she's got a figure that you would kill to have. I've seen a photograph of her, blonde big brown eyes and a lovely smile..............but behind that smile she's got a secret............she's got cystic fibrosis and she's got a blue badge for when she's having problems. My daughter's told me that she gets terrible abuse from people.
I think that the problem is that people think that to qualify for a badge you have to have some visible disability, the sign for the blue badge parking doesn't help either..........a wheel chair. People just can't accept the fact that you can look normal but still have some sort of mobility problem and you do not have the obligatory grey hair and wrinkles.
My husband sometimes remarks if he sees a sports car parked with a blue badge saying that they can't be that disabled if they can get in and out of it, yet when my feet aren't playing ball and it hurts me to walk and I ask him to park near the doors of the supermarket he always says 'Why don't you get a blue badge?'
I once read a post on another forum from a young girl with RA, just found it..............Take your pick...........
And you look Intelligent!
And you don't look stupid!
But I tried so hard!
Really? That's odd!
Really? (Look down at yourself) I'm cured!!!
Where did you get your medical degree from?
For when people are are being rude- I don't look ( Insert age here) either, but it doesn't change the fact I am!
Why thankyou, that's so sweet of you to say that!
I wasn't aware illnesses came mounted on a billboard!
Huh? What does sick look like?
There's a well person striving to escape this body !
How sweet of you to say that. I've been so tired, I haven't bathed in three days. And I was sort of worried about going out in public looking like this. So thanks for the compliment. It's really made my day.
And I guess your X-ray vision isn't working too well today either! You should see how corroded some of my body is on the inside. Some of my joints are in their 90's, some in their 70's. It's hard to keep track! ! !
Yeah, isn't it great. I guess I'm the healthiest looking sick person you've ever seen, huh? Isn't it weird how looks can deceive.
Yep well it's nothing to get excited about !
Well I'm NOT sick, my body is!
What do you think "Don't judge a book by it's cover" means?
Just because I look ok, doesn't mean I'm fine.
I work hard to look this good.
Are you flirting with me?
I have good and bad days, but I'll never be the way I was before I got sick.
Should I get a refund?
It's really good to know that the 4 hours it took me to get out of bed, and get ready this morning wasn't wasted!
Really? Ok lets trade bodies for the day!
What exactly does (insert illness) look like?
Ignorance is bliss I guess!
Thanks! I only needed one painkiller today instead of 5!
oh good..... because "not sick" is just the look I was going for!

Nice one Doreen! And those remarks are brilliant! I have got myself some of those REALLY sticky stickers that say 'you took my parking space now take my disability' and you stick them on the windscreen of any illegally parked cars in the disabled bays. Haven't used one yet but can't wait! YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.
